Good evening, I’m Emily, and welcome to the “Evening Update”. In November 2023, The Aftermath Foundation launched a new initiative to assist the estimated 4,000 Scientologists enduring indentured servitude within Scientology’s Sea Organization. These members work long hours, lack medical and dental care, and are cut off from the outside world, facing extreme isolation and control.
The Aftermath Foundation, dedicated to helping these individuals escape and start anew, teamed up with former Scientologist Phil Jones, known for his 2016 Call Me billboard campaign against Scientology’s “disconnection” policy. Disconnection forces Scientologists to sever ties with anyone deemed an enemy by the church, leading to family estrangement.
After securing a billboard near Scientology’s buildings in Los Angeles, displaying a simple message and a helpline, Scientology quickly reacted by attempting to block the billboard from view. Despite initial support from Clear Channel Outdoor, the billboard was removed on March 12, 2024, under pressure from Scientology.
Scientology’s strong reaction highlights their fear of the message reaching their members, contradicting their claim that members are “free to leave.” The Aftermath Foundation remains undeterred and plans to continue its efforts to help those in Scientology’s grip.
Support for the campaign has surged, with tripled phone contacts in three days. To support their cause, donations are welcomed.
